For some reason I cannot play rar files in VLC. The same files used to work before, though on other distributions as far as I recall.

Version: Package vlc-3.0.0-0.15.fc25.x86_64

I do not get any error messages, but nothing happens when I open the rar file using VLC.

Does anyone have an idea what the issue could be?

.rar files are archives. VLC has never been able to open these files in my experience. First open the archive in archive manager, extract the data that you want, and then open that in VLC.

VLC has been able to open these files for years. I've just tested it in my Xubuntu VM. No need for extracting, just right click->open with vlc.

Try install sudo dnf install unar unrar p7zip

I had already installed unrar, installing unar and p7zip did not help either.
