I need to know how to configure a Fedora 17 system to use a static IP address from the command-line. I've tryed editing /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and it doesn't do anything.

For static IP configuration you need to edit the following files

  1. Edit /etc/sysconfig/network

Sample Data

NETWORKING=yes
HOSTNAME=server1.cyber.com
GATEWAY=192.168.1.254
  1. Edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0

Sample static ip configuration

# Intel Corporation 82575E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Copper)
DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=static
DHCPCLASS=
HWADDR=00:30:48:56:A6:2E
IPADDR=192.168.1.10
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
ONBOOT=yes
  1. Edit /etc/resolv.conf

Sample Data

search isp.com
nameserver 202.54.1.111
nameserver 202.54.1.114
nameserver 202.54.1.115

Finally, you need to restart the networking service,
