I have skylake cpu with intel hd graphics 540.

Display is not recognized (unknown display, can't change resolution) and screen tearing appears

I did

  • install intel driver updater tool v2.0.4 (run and reboot)
  • add i915.preliminaryhwsupport=1 to kernel boot options
  • update grub2 config

this command

lspci -kvvnn | grep -E 'VGA c|driver in use' | grep -A1 8086

gave output

VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation HD Graphics 530 [8086:1912] (rev 06) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Kernel driver in use: xhci_hcd

AFAIK driver should be i915 or I'm wrong?

You're my hero. Had the same problem since upgrading from kernel 4.08 to 4.11 just with an older intel cpu.
