I upgraded my monitor from 1080p monitor to 3440 x 1440, and my video card from some motherboard Intel video to an NVidia Geforce GTK 1050 Ti video card a couple weeks ago.

In the past several days, the following items cause the gnome desktop to disappear and take me back to the login:

1) Playing (by double-clicking) a multimedia file using Totem. (The file can be played using VLC) 2) When I right click on the multimedia file, and select "Properties" - I was trying to change the default application for a multimedia file. 3) Launching gnome-control-center - via GUI or command line.

I was having delays in GDM - mouse was slow/jerky, password entry was delayed several seconds. I switched to XOrg from Wayland and at least that works better.

It now fails when using just the older 1080p monitor. I'm using the noveau driver. I can play multimedia with Totem from a Fedora 25 Live CD (albeit in lower resolution). I can view you-tube video and a use a browser. I have Kodi, and can play HDHomeRun.

I don't really know how to use the journalctl to find errors or even the right terminology to do a web search with. What is the desktop - "gnome-session"? Where are the desktop log files? Is it possible to do a core dump? Would segfaults be logged in journalctl?

Is there some metadata somewhere that is corrupted, or not compatible with the higher resolution?

do not know if nouveau supports 4k resolution, which is the resolution you are trying to run. Find the forum post to install an nvidia driver, either akmod, negativo17 or proprietary. There are several, including some written by me. I use nvidia proprietary and love it.
