Fedora version : 26

I have 2 questions on firefox in fedora 26.

Question1. Does firefox come pre-installed in Fedora 26 ?

Question2. Recently, I ran yum update firefox and it updated my firefox to the latest version (version 57). But, I haven't configured any repo file(channel) for firefox/mozilla . So, how did firefox get updated ?

Shown below are repo files in /etc/yum.repos.d directory. yum list installed output shows "updates" repo as shown below But, there is no mention of firefox or mozilla in fedora-updates.repo file (see the grep command output at the bottom )

[sysadmin@john07 yum.repos.d]$ yum list installed | grep firefox
firefox.x86_64                         57.0-2.fc26              @updates
[sysadmin@john07 yum.repos.d]$
[sysadmin@john07 yum.repos.d]$ pwd

[sysadmin@john07 yum.repos.d]$ ls -l

Firefox is a package included in the default installation of Fedora Workstation.

It's been some time since I installed Fedora from scratch, so not really sure if Firefox is preinstalled or automatically installed during initial installation of Fedora. But you can at least install it with dnf install firefox.

Software that is installable is provided by repositories and most software is packaged by Fedora maintainers and provided through the Fedora repositories. There is not extra Mozilla/Firefox repository as most software is provided by the Fedora repos. There are some more repositories out there you can add and it seems that you already added some.

With dnf info firefox you should be able to see from which repository the package was installed.

You also should switch from yum to dnf.

[sysadmin@john07 yum.repos.d]$ yum list installed | grep firefox firefox.x86_64 57.0-2.fc26 @updates

already says that firefox was installed from the updates repository.

Yes, I have seen this. But I wanted to mention that you can more directly search for that info instead of reading all installed packages then grep for something in that "string-stream".

dnf list firefox perhaps. No grep needed.

Run dnf info firefox. Then look for the From repo line.

Ok. Thank You thomaswood, vilykruse.

Below are first 12 lines of /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates.repo

So, using the fedora's 'updates' repo, mozilla/firefox servers are internally connected and the new firefox rpms are downloaded ?

[sysadmin@john07 yum.repos.d]$ cat fedora-updates.repo
[updates]
name=Fedora $releasever - $basearch - Updates
failovermethod=priority
#baseurl=http://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/updates/$releasever/$basearch/
metalink=https://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/metalink?repo=updates-released-f$releasever&arch=$basearch
enabled=1
repo_gpgcheck=0
type=rpm
gpgcheck=1
metadata_expire=6h
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora-$releasever-$basearch
skip_if_unavailable=False
