For a long time I could use my iPhone without any issue as network device under Fedora, and this across several updates. It just worked.

Then it didn't work anymore...

When I connect my iPhone with the USB cable I see the following happening:

  • The device gets correctly identified, and a ipheth device is created.
  • NetworkManager detects this, and renames the eth0 device to enp0s20u2c4i2

    Apr 23 10:20:57 architect.kri.st NetworkManager[1214]: <info>  [1524471657.0041] manager: (eth0): new Ethernet device (/org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/Devices/12)
    Apr 23 10:20:57 architect.kri.st NetworkManager[1214]: <info>  [1524471657.0191] device (eth0): interface index 10 renamed iface from 'eth0' to 'enp0s20u2c4i2'

  • NetworkManager then proceeds to set the device to "unavailable":

Apr 23 10:20:57 architect.kri.st NetworkManager[1214]: <info>  [1524471657.0238] device (enp0s20u2c4i2): state change: unmanaged -> unavailable (reason 'managed', internal state 'external')

I gues the reason that the interface does not get configured by NetworkManager is that it is marked "unavailable", so NM does not proceed further.

So I would like to know: - How do I find out why NM marks this interface as "unavailable" - How do I fix this?

I tried to find out a state diagram for NetworkManager, so I could trace the different states a interface could be in, and how it moves from one state to another, but did not find anything. Can someone point me to a good debugging/diagnostics guide for NetworkManager?
