During a kernel update, gcc also updated to 8.1.1 and on next reboot, lightdm failed to load. Logs showed that the video driver was compiled with a gcc with different minor version than the new kernel, so I have downgraded gcc, back to 8.0.1 until the kernel catches up with the compiler update. If you had this issue, and lightdm fails, just ctrl-alt-F2 and login as root. do dnf downgrade gcc and then reinstall the video driver so that it builds for the current kernel using the old gcc 8.0.1 and all should work again. after you reboot, if you want to update gcc again, you should be okay, assuming of course that the next kernel is compiled with 8.1.1 when it gets here.
