A good one to start with is this Q & A: Install video/audio codes. Same answer also talks about installation of VLC

1.) Enable rpmfusion free repository (non-free is optional)

sudo dnf install https://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm

2.) Install vlc

 sudo dnf install vlc

(Check gpg keys here)

As far as I know, VLC is free software and the non-free parts of RPM Fusion are not required to install it.

That’s right, you don’t have to install the non-free

On Fedora 28 you have some options to install software:

  1. The software-center of your desktop: search for vlc and press install
  2. search on desktop for "dnfdragora" (a graphical software manager for Fedora) and start it. There you can search for vlc.
  3. for your information: you can do that all I mentioned too in a terminal with the sudo dnf ....command (see the documentation on Fedora.org)

I hope it will help you to do your first steps with Fedora 28. If you have further questions feel free to ask again.

Remark: vlc can only be found in the rpm fusion repositories (see http://rpmfusion.org for installation instructions) and must be enabled if installed already. You can do that in dnfdragora or in the software center of your desktop.

Other way; Vlc is available in UnitedRPMs; here the rhythm is accelerated; and you have the current vlc. Copy & paste in a terminal...

1. su

2. rpm --import https://raw.githubusercontent.com/UnitedRPMs/unitedrpms/master/URPMS-GPG-PUBLICKEY-Fedora-24

3. dnf -y install https://github.com/UnitedRPMs/unitedrpms/releases/download/7/unitedrpms-$(rpm -E %fedora)-7.fc$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm

4. dnf clean all && dnf -y update && dnf -y install vlc

Sorry, that can´t give an answer. I´m a newbee. So if i make a fault to post my problem - as described below - at the wrong place, please pardon me.

I have problem after the installation of vlc inside fedora 28.

The installlation itself worked well. But standardly i would like to start the program VLC to run a videofile.

But if i click on a videofile, it always starts with another program, which i can´t delete. Is there a way to eliminate that other program and use only vlc for video files or fix the use of vlc ??

The best would be to post this as a new question. Not as answer to another question, even if that one is related to VLC.
