No local standard disks found during installation

asked 2018-08-02 15:23:28 -0600

Hi - I am new to Linux. I am trying to install Fedora 28 Workstation alongside Windows 10 on my laptop from a live image on a USB thumb drive. When I choose Install to Hard Drive, and click Installation Destination, there is nothing listed under Local Standard Disks - see photo attached - and so can't carry on with the install. How can I resolve this? Any advice would be very welcome! Thanks

Did you make space on your actual disk?

But how, you need to have the free space with out partition not only free space on the drive you need to shrink you windows partition and make empty space so Fedora can see it.

Thanks for helping! Perhaps I misunderstood, but I thought the Fedora installer dealt with this ...? See this guide for instance (steps 5 &6): https://www.lifewire.com/guide-to-ins...

When doing dual boot it is better to use windows tools to make the space. At lease in my experience.

From the helpful advice I've received here, it sounds as if the problem is that my Windows 10 Dell XPS 9350 is set up with UEFI mode and secure boot enabled, and that is probably the reason why the installer can't find a "local standard disk" to install Fedora on. As a relatively inexperienced user I'm not confident about changing BIOS settings, so I'll find another way of getting to know Fedora!
