every time I try to use the command

# sudo dnf install <application_name>

it gives me an error

Bad id for repo:
mirrors.fedoraproject.org_mirrorlist_repo=fedora-28,
byte = = 41

after a while, it checks the last metadata expiration check

Last metadata expiration check: 1:49:01 ago on Wed 05 Sep 2018 17:52:58 IST.

I tried using the following commands which I got from a similar question but for Fedora 23

# cd /etc/yum.repos.d
# grep org_mirrorlist_repo *

and the output was:

 mirrors.fedoraproject.org_mirrorlist_repo=fedora-28.repo:[mirrors.fedoraproject.org_mirrorlist_repo=fedora-28]

please help me I'm new to Fedora and Linux and I have no experience with it

I tried the commands

[lolz_kat_XD@localhost ~]$ sudo dnf clean all
Bad id for repo: mirrors.fedoraproject.org_mirrorlist_repo=fedora-28, byte = = 41
132 files removed
[lolz_kat_XD@localhost ~]$ sudo dnf update
Bad id for repo: mirrors.fedoraproject.org_mirrorlist_repo=fedora-28, byte = = 41

after all the things and updates(?) I got a warning during it, not sure if it will be useful or not but here it is

warning: /var/cache/dnf/rpmfusion-free-updates-18aab6236926d6fd/packages/compat-ffmpeg28-2.8.15-1.fc28.x86_64.rpm: Header V4 RSA/SHA1 Signature, key ID 09eab3f2: NOKEY

after it all ended I tried to install something and it again did the same thing

so I tried the other commands and the result was this:

[lolz_kat_XD@localhost ~]$ cd /etc/yum.repos.d
[lolz_kat_XD@localhost yum.repos.d]$ sudo grep mirrorlist *
mirrors.fedoraproject.org_mirrorlist_repo=fedora-28.repo:[mirrors.fedoraproject.org_mirrorlist_repo=fedora-28]
mirrors.fedoraproject.org_mirrorlist_repo=fedora-28.repo:name=created by dnf config-manager from https://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist?repo=fedora-28
mirrors.fedoraproject.org_mirrorlist_repo=fedora-28.repo:baseurl=https://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist?repo=fedora-28

sorry for the delay but here's the output

[lolz_kat_XD@localhost ~]$ dnf repolist

mirrors.fedoraproject.org_mirrorlist_repo=fedora-28.repo:name=created by dnf config-manager from https://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist?repo=fedora-28

this seems wrong. if that's supposed the fedora.repo, it should look like this.

What where you trying to add using dnf config-manager? Some third party repo?

As for your problem with rpmfusion, you may be missing the key. How did you add that repo?

Can you show the output of dnf repolist please.

Is this a newly installed instance of Fedora? If so, while it should be instructional to diagnose it, it is easier to reinstall.

no need to reinstall because some messed-up repos. show us dnf repolist, then remove all third-party repos that were not setup correctly, then re-add those repos again. Also you want to make sure that fedora.repo and fedora-updates.repo are in the original state.

That sounds pretty much like a problem with the mirror or repo server you are trying to connect to.

Try

sudo dnf clean all

(that deletes your cache, including mirrorlist)

followed by

sudo dnf update

And then try installing your software.

FYI, if you look your fedora.repo file, you see that dnf uses the so-called metalink. That's an URL where a xml file is provided that has a list of mirrors your system is going to connect to. (# cat /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repo)

What is this fedora-28.repo? Something you added or edited manually? You shouldn't need that.

Ah, and some repos like tlp for example, they use mirrorlist

mirrorlist=http://repo.linrunner.de/fedora/tlp/mirrors/$releasever/$basearch/tlp-source.txt

there could be something wrong with that repo for example. If that's the case check back later!

cd /etc/yum.repos.d
sudo grep mirrorlist *

should show you the repo causing the error.
