Reset your .bashrc file, that sounds like the issue. Back up the one that doesn't work under some filename backup-bashrc, copy /etc/bashrc to ~/.bashrc. That should fix the issue.

I.m embarrassed! when I set the terminal to black on white, picked a near-white colour for text in error, so everything was working as expected. Sorry, people.

Fix the hosts file.

The hosts file has nothing to do with what happens in a terminal.

Really? Wipe off "localhost" and tell me how your terminal looks like...

That just means that your terminal doesn't display anything, even if it's able to show up on your desktop. And, if that were the issue, I don't think that other programs, such as your web browser would be working properly. If your terminal is the only program having trouble, the overwhelming odds are that your hosts file isn't responsible.
