Oh Man I reboot this machine and everything goes OK until I get to an almost continuous output about starting User Manager for UID 42 and then stopping User Manager for UID

As far as I can tell UID is GDM

My video card is NVIDEA, the nouveau drivers are well and truly blacklisted. I can use 4.17 kernel to get up and running. But nothing with the latest version of the Kernel - no matter how long I let it run

here's part of the journctl log

In

/etc/gdm/custom.conf

you will find the line:

#WaylandEnable=false

Uncomment the line with kernel 4.17, that is as root delete the hash, reboot and try again with 4.18. When entering Gnome afterwards chose "Gnome on X", not Wayland.

Comments

WaylandEnable=false was already uncommented, the start-up sequence never completes so I cant choose anything.

however, if I now no longer have myself (the only user of this machine) automatically logged in boot halts at "Started GNOME Display Manager" and just sits there - I left it for 45 minutes in case something was happening

Cannot guess what had you already done if you are not clear. How did you install nvidia drivers in first place? Does it work with nouveau? Are you sure uid 42 is gdm?

I installed the NVIDEA drivers (the linux drivers from the hardware manufacturer) using these instructions
