After running an dnf update today I found my system unable to login. After entering my password the screen just freezes.

Workarounds (working):

  • Installing a different DE: Kde works fine
  • empty home folder works

I tried (not working):

  • removing gnome shell extensions (~/.local/share/gnome-shell)
  • removing all apps from session auto start

So there are workarounds but instead of starting with a fresh home-folder I would like to determine what went wrong. How do I debug this? I can't find any meaningful logs

From journalctl SYSLOG_IDENTIFIER=gnome-session:

gnome-session-binary[16504]: WARNING: App 'spice-vdagent.desktop' exited with code 1
gnome-session-binary[16504]: WARNING: Not able to stop app from its condition: Not running

EDIT: Found more interesting stuff searching through journalctl:

Erase all gnome extensions. In

~/.local/share/gnome-shell

rename directory extensions as, say, extensions.old .

doesn't change anything and I also uninstalled the system-wide extensions via dnf.

You don't say anything about your distribution version and such. What Fedora? What upgrade? There was an old bug with the same behaviour:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug....

Sorry, missed the last few lines with F28 and gnome-shell version. Moreover, I don't think the bug applies, otherwise the empty home would not work anyway.
Could well be a dconf problem. What happens when you rename/remove ~/.config/dconf ?

after quite some testing (starting with a empty home folder and moving folder by folder back) I found the culprit to be .bashrc

I had the following line in my bashrc:

export XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=Unity

which is responsible for the crash.. somehow...

unity... the root of all evil. It wreaks havoc even when it's not there. It would be nice if you would post your solution to bugzilla also.
