I have just installed but not modified any repo file. Running dnf command with -v shows the error as titled.

Seems like a bug. However it doesn't happen in fedora, as in this exact moment dnf is at version 4.0.4 . If you're using 4.0.9 it's your choice and having troubles is at your complete responsibility.

You should read first the link you provide. 4.0.9 is for F30, rawhide... 4.0.4 belongs to F29, it's the real one. So please erase the downvote that makes no sense at all and it's purely offensive.

I actually read it. 4.0.9 is in the pipeline to hit f29 stable. OP must have updates-testing enabled.

For sure, this “bug” wasn’t introduced with dnf 4.0.9.

I reversed the down-vote, simply because I don’t want you to be unhappy. The answer itself deserves a down-vote since it’s not answering OP’s question at all. Don’t take down-voting personal!!

Nothing personal. I just get irked by people that use strange and unstable stuff in their boxes without writing and asking for help complaining why it doesn't work as expected. Like pouring water on motherboard and getting mad because computer is broken. And unless a package is in stable, it should be triaged and not assumed to be "good" in any sense. That's all.

My dnf outputs the same warning under F29.

Also, dnf's documentation does not list such option.

It may well be that this configuration key has been deprecated with version 4.0 and the Fedora's repo files haven't been updated since.

On my F28 box, dnf (ver 2.7.x) does not complain about thefailovermethod config in repo files.

I filed a bug against Fedora‘s fedora-repos package, rhbz#1653831
