After installing updates on my Fedora 28 machine, the Ethernet ports no longer work. When I try to bring them up manually I get this error:

Error: Connection activation failed: The device 'p36p1' has no connections available for activation.

nmcli shows:

# nmcli d
DEVICE TYPE STATE CONNECTION
wlp1s0 wifi connected Auto zeus
enp6s0 ethernet unavailable --
p36p1 ethernet unavailable --
lo loopback unmanaged --

My Ethernet devices:

# lspci | grep Ether
06:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 02)
07:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 02)

I attached what "dnf history" shows was changed.

  1. You've mentioned dnf history but hasn't provided it. Check if NetworkManager packages were updated. If so I would downgrade them and see if it solves your problem.

  2. Check this link, please. Person there (with the same problem) changed interface names to traditional naming scheme and said it helped: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=231991

  3. Also from cursory search it looks like people are getting this problem with NetworkManager from time to time, but I haven't found clear proven way to fix it.

This seems to be a problem with kernel-4.19. I found a workaround here: https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/ques...

You're not the first one to have such problems with that realtek ethernet in F29. Upgrade the kernel to one that works, then check bugzilla.redhat.com for similar bugs. If they're absent, file a bug report for your case.

Should read: F28 AND F29.
