Can the kernel be updated even if kmod-nvidia is not available?

Hi,

Lately, I have been running into issues with the Nvidia proprietary driver. I had installed akmod-nvidia but it couldn't build the kernel module for newest kernels.

The problem has been solved but I wonder if it would have been a better idea to install the package kmod-nvidia (especially because it wasn't my computer and I couldn't fix it easily).

Will kernel updates be blocked if the corresponding package kmod-nvidia is not available?

No, there's nothing preventing the kernel from updating if kmod-nvidia hasn't been updated yet. All you need to do is pay attention and not reboot until it's ready, generally speaking within a day or so. And, you do need to reboot or turn your machine off, just make sure to select the previous kernel from the GRUB menu and use it until things get caught up.

Thanks for your prompt reply. So I'll stick to akmod!
