Hi there,

Could anyone give me some information on installing a more modern operating system? Would you recommend that I upgrade step by step, or go straight to a fresh install with fedora20?

The upgrade tool goes by the name 'fedup'. If you're preparing to do a fresh install, you could certainly have a go at an upgrade first - and if it goes badly for you then go down the fresh install route. Just make sure you have a solid backup of your /home directory - or unmount the partition during the upgrade.

The correct incantation is, I believe, fedup --network 20. You might have to upgrade to 18 and 19 first. I've never upgraded from 17 to 20 in one go, but I'm sure others here can advise.

you cant upgrade from F17 to F20 with fedup, this is only possible from F18, so i would suggest backing up your home folder, fresh installing F20, and restoring your home backup.

Don't try to upgrade over so many releases. For one thing, it will take hours into days to go from one release to the next and then on to the next. For the sake of time and your own sanity backup your important data and do a fresh install. In the long run this will be much faster.

Thanks for the help. Were I to do a fresh install, is there a quick way in which to save or quickly re-install all the software which I have on my current system. Also, is there a way to save browser bookmarks etc.?

However, you can upgrade from F17 to F19 (as I did on five separate systems) and then proceed to F20.
