After several discussions and reading I feel the best way to do it is:
1. download the latest source file (tar) from the nodeJS website.
2. unpack the file using:

tar -xzf <filename-version>.tar.gz

3. go to the directory that has been created as a result of unpacking.

cd <directory name>

4. run the command

./configure

5. Become the root user and run the command

make install

That should install nodeJS successfully.
