Hi,

I am new here as well as to Linux, especially Fedora. I'll try to find out where to "install" application for my user only. What I'd like to install is not available via yum, it is an archive that has to be extracted somewhere. Can anyone tell me where this should be placed?

Thanks in advance. Oscar

You should extract stuff into you own home directory - it's the only place you should have write access on the system anyway. As long as you know the executable name within the extracted directory structure, you can call it directly from the command line.

See https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/question/41151/how-do-i-install-sweet-home-3d-exactly/ for an example. As @cobra says - use $HOME as the software installation directory.

Alternatively, /usr/local/ is a good place for this. For example:

  • create a subdirectory in /usr/local/new-app-name
  • extract all stuff to that => sub-dirs bin, ... may be created there
  • create symbolic links ln -s to executables you want in /usr/local/bin so that you don't need to change PATH.

Not really for 'my user only' though, its more of a proper install for everyone to use. It is the correct way to do a hands-on system install, but it will make the package available to all users.

Thank you very much for that explaination. /usr/local for "all-user-installations", otherwise the home directory.
