Hi guys!

I know AskFedora is pretty new and it has had many advancements since it first started thanks to @mether and @FransiscoD. However, there are some (pretty) minor issues here and there that are experienced every 1 day and some that are to do with karma. I'm not a "moderator" or "admin", but I have some suggestions that may be accepted or maybe not. Anyway, here goes:

Firstly, newly registered users should be able to be upvote with a limit of 10 upvotes due to the fact that they (probably) do not have more than 1 karma, which is what they start with. Unfortunately, I started with the same issue, and could not upvote one of the great answers that I got. I had to wait for a week for me to get an upvote and then I could upvote and also accept answer :(. So, that's why newly registered users should be able to be upvote although it is sort of "against the rules."

Secondly, all question formatting tools and images, etc. should be enabled at 1 karma. For example, a guy who just registered is posting a question and is unable to describe his exact problem. Therefore, he takes a perfect little screenshot and tries to post the picture. However, he cannot, due to the fact that he only has 1 karma. So, he tries to post in Google Drive. Then, he has to share with the link and enable people to only view it. After that, post the link on Ask. What an amount of work to get a single picture on Ask! That's why all question formatting tools and images, etc. should be enabled at 1 karma or even when they have 6 karma (easier).

Thirdly, uploading should be fixed because I can't upload anything. Also, I get this error every single time when I tried to upload a file (e.g. a very long script or conf file that's really big). For example, I tried to upload my abrt.conf to @zoltanh's question, but it came up with an error to contact the administator, which is pretty much why I'm posting all of this. I don't know if this works for anyone else besides me, but it certainly doesn't work for me which is very much a pain. Furthermore, I know that I can upload files because it says on the FAQ page for AskFedora.

Finally, the inbox doesn't work very well. There's always 4 unread in my inbox, and I can't seem to get rid of them. When I hover near the red maibox sign, the popup says you have 4 new responses even though I have clicked "ALL" and 'mark as seen'. Why is this happening to me? Is it happening to anyone else besides me? Any ideas on how to fix this behaviour?

Thanks for listening to my ideas! I hope you can think about considering about (:D) implementing these ... (more)

Secondly, all question formatting tools and images, etc. should be enabled at 1 karma.

Images and especially Links, should not be enabled at karma 1. That is a rule, at almost all stackexchange-like sites. If we enable links and pictures from kamra 1, spammers and other "trolls" will enter "party mode", soon enough.

Thirdly, uploading should be fixed because I can't upload anything.

That's probably a bug, but I intent to suggest complete removal of this feature. It's not needed, at my opinion.

To upload content, you can use fpaste (as Zoltanh suggested), or if you want to upload a picture, you can use any free hosting site and upload the link here. Click on the image box and enter the URL there.

Finally, the inbox doesn't work very well.

That's also a bug, Askbot (Ask Fedora's running code) will get a massive update (or already got, I'm not sure) and soon enough the administrators of Ask Fedora will update the site. Hopefully, this bug as lot of others will be fixed.

Firstly, newly registered users should be able to be upvote with a limit of 10 upvotes

I agree on that. :)

Unfortunately, Askbot currently doesn't not provide us with a setting to permit "new users to vote with a limit of 10 votes". At the moment, if you have 10 karma (which means getting a single upvote), you can vote 30 times in a day. Please file enhancement requests at askbot.org and use the tag askfedora. That way we can track requests we make to upstream.

@hello, don't thank with comments. Give "Thanks" with upvotes or disagree with downvotes :)

@NikTh - However, the person who gets the "Thanks" using the upvotes won't know who upvoted them :P

Mostly we use, or suggest to use fpaste.org - what is our own pastebin. It stores till 1 month- if you wish even privatelly either - the script that you want to provide as help, and also there are public image services that gives aid in form of beautiful links. Yes, in images the service gives resized pictures, so you don't have to worry about it, but otherwise, you can easily blow up/flood any topic easily. Uploading is limited - because WE HAVE TO STORE IT, maintain it - and believe me - around of this amount of knowledge base - gives not only "ham" else nice "fat" too in content. Ask any moderators, how many crap we have to fight through - not only because of spam, else because the users forget to accept the answer and close it as SOLVED.

Voting is necessary, because helps to organise, and protects us from spammers, and inspires users to get more experience making a good job - because we have to cooperate, not oly receive help only. (No complaining, or yelling.)

So, again - please USE fpaste.org , and use our links in the system. Also allow me to give to everybody a hint. When you would like to share code, USE fpaste.org as you using in terminal the pipeline technics. Eg. if you have to send or share your dmesg, you don't have to do anything else just the following: dmesg | fpaste and hit enter. The pipe sends over to our public pastebin service - and you have to only insert into the post one of the provided links. Thats all.

HTH.

Just curious, how do you become a moderator? For example, how about me, when can I become a moderator (just curious :))?

You cannot become a moderator if an administrator does not approve you. Zoltanh, he is a trusted Fedora user (long-long time ago) and one of the persons participating here from the beginning. At the beginning of Ask Fedora, the site had a need for some trusted persons to act as moderators. So, Zoltanh, as other users as well, volunteered to become a part of this community driver project and help the growth and proper functionality too. As your karma points increased, you will get more privileges and at 2000 points you will gain moderator privileges.

  • Firstly, newly registered users should be able to be upvote with a limit of 10 upvotes ...

If someone new asks a good question, vote it up. If they ask a question poorly, don't vote it up - or even downvote it. These measures are in place to provide incentive for quality participation. As a participant, it's up to you to provide karma for users that you feel have earned it.

  • Secondly, all question formatting tools and images, etc. should be enabled at 1 karma.

The best way to use Ask Fedora is to look for similar issues and collaborate to improve questions and answers. I've found it very difficult to search for a problem or a solution that is only described in a screenshot or image. The process of gathering information and composing an effective question might seem like a lot more work than just taking a screenshot and letting someone else figure it out, but you learn from that process.

Keep in mind that the intent of the karma system is to encourage users to participate and to do what they can to help themselves, their helpers, and others who need help. The most effective thing we're doing here at Ask Fedora is teaching users how to investigate their own problems, and most of the methods for gaining karma involve participating usefully in questions other than your own.

Just as an unmeasured (but reasonably informed) guess, I'd say that 60% of the questions here are duplicated issues that could have been identified by looking over the site for similar issues with a variety of related keywords. 30% are questions that aren't obvious duplicates, or they don't have very close correlaries, but users could still use information on the site to identify and resolve their issue. 10% are original questions. The system you're advocating would only serve to increase redundancy and remove incentive for participation and research.

  • Finally, the inbox doesn't work very well.

This one is an upstream issue, sorry :)
