Hi, since a few months booting my F20-system very often ends up in a blank screen without GDM login screen without any error message in /var/log/boot.log. Fortunately but by very pure chance I found a simple workaround for this: I just close the lid of my laptop to enforce hibernate mode and than reopen it to get to the login screen.

Any ideas for a better solution?

There must be some error logged somewhere. Can you please check the complete journalctl output for the boot using journalctl -b to see if there's any. You can also use the filtering options provided by journalctl. Please read man journalctl to see how these are to be used.

These are all red lines in the output of journalctl -b

[drm:i965_irq_handler] *ERROR* pipe A underrun
kvm: disabled by bios
gdm[680]: GLib-GObject: g_object_ref: assertion 'object->ref_count > 0' failed
gdm[680]: GLib-GObject: g_object_unref: assertion 'object->ref_count > 0' failed

Nah. They aren't gdm related. I haven't had this issue recently. When I did have it, I used to head to a virtual console: ctrl alt f2 and restart gdm: sudo systemctl restart gdm.service. I never got down to debugging it either.

Ok. Thanks. I'll try this the next time I have this issue. But I think the last two lines of my posted output for journalctl -b actually are gdm related! First, they start with gdm, second they do not appear when the gdm login screen is available after booting.

I think this is a bug. Recently I rarely see GDM screen since I usually suspend my laptop. However, yesterday (or the day before yesterday), I restarted my system and seen the same behavior. I have not yet tried to debug it, but it occurs a lot. And it seems that some times just switching to a virtual terminal and switching back to graphical terminal brings the gdm login screen.

i had install fedora 22 kde spin. i tried installing the nvidia drivers (with rpmfusion guide, actual nvidia driver etc but i had to uninstall nvidia completely due to black screen, no login screen) but failed. i uninstall nvidia and reinstall nouveau but now it never comes up wtih a login screen but just a black screen. if i press ctrl+alt+f2, login as root and startx, it fails too. currently typing this from windows 8 from the same machine. my struggle continue from over 2 months.
