I have Fedora20-GNOME. I have installed Thunderbird as email client. GNOME desktop doesnt give me notifications if new mail has received or not. How to get these notifications?

Did try plugins from "firefox" or "extensions.gnome.org" if you use "Mailbox Alert 0.16.4" it work well.

Use command

gnome-control-center notifications

and "ON" the settings for "Show Pop Up Banners". Also below you can customize which applications should show you notifications.

But for these to work do I need to start the thunderbird. I mean to ask, if theres any way to start thunderbird service in backgroiund(not starting the application) so that, when new mail arrives, it gives me a notification.

you need that application running already so that it can fetch the updates(new emails say) and give you notification when those updates arrives.
