Having this package installed caused VLC to open but not play the video.

Same result here. After removing the package I get

Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_va_gl.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_va_gl.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_va_gl.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_va_gl.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

removing the package also removed libva-intel-driver.

Don't install libvdpauvagl.so. VLC doesn't need it and libvdpauvagl seems to have known conflicts with VLC.

Removing the libvdpau-va-gl1 package fixes this crash. Need to test what the drawbacks are on this workaround. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+so...

As @doveyoung say she/he can replicate an issue. And after reading the above bug report on launchpad, I would not install libvdpauvagl.so.
