f15 -> f16 preupgrade failure(s)

I've encountered several failure while upgrading from F15 to F16. First I used yum to update my f15 installation. Next, I installed and executed the preupgrade script.

After downloading the rpms, I rebooted and attempted upgrade #1. This failed as some point with a kernel oops related to ext4.

Next I rebooted to attempt the upgrade again. This seems to pick up where it left off but failed while trying to install samba-client. I didn't see any obvious error messages or figure out why this package failed.

Lastly, I've tried rebooting into the upgrade again. Anaconda starts ok but now the laptop seems hung during "Dependency Check". If I switch terminals I see one error: "INFO anaconda: Error downloading treeinfo: [Errno 14] Could not open/read file:///mnt/sysimage//var/cache/yum/preupgrade/treeinfo

What can I do to debug this further and complete the installation?

Since you are halfway through the update you will need to use yum directly. Boot into a normal kernel (not preupgrade). Check that you have the Fedora 16 release package.

# rpm -q fedora-release
fedora-release-16-1.noarch

If this comes back on your system then you need to run the following commands:

# yum distro-sync
# package-cleanup --cleandupes

If you still have the Fedora 15 package you need to run these commands:

# yum --releasever=16 distro-sync
# package-cleanup --cleandupes

You will also need to install GRUB2 to your Master Boot Record to complete the upgrade.
