Either make the file executable, and then run it while specifying the path:

chmod +x somefile.sh
./somefile.sh

or, pass it to the shell interpreter like this:

sh somefile.sh

Be careful running programs that are from untrusted sources! Here's a link with some more shell basics:

I have the same question, and the answer by Sten does not solve it, unfortunately.

For example, I enjoy playing games via Vassal ( vassalengine.org ), and this worked fine under Ubuntu, Mageia, Debian and Mint. Either by double-clicking on the vassal.sh icon, or by typing "sh VASSAL.sh" on the command line in the proper directory.

This morning I installed Fedora 24 Workstation, and neither option (clicking the icon, typing the command) works to start up Vassal. On the command line, when I type "sh VASSAL.sh" or even "bash VASSAL.sh", the prompt pauses for a few seconds, and then shows me my prompt and cursor again on the next line, as if nothing happened. Trying the "chmod +x" command first changes nothing in the result. Is there another way to go about this, or is there a step that I should do that I am missing? SomethingI should install first?

Thanks in advance!
