a complete newby trying to change file permissions

I am trying to change file permissions in samba/smb.conf, cannot find out how to change permissions and save the edited file.

edit retag flag offensive close merge delete

I thing you are trying to do is modify smb.conf you don't need change permission to modify file this, this file is owner by root so you need privileged permission (sudo or su -), follow this step to modify the essence of this file :

 1. Open a Terminal
 2. type su -
 3. cd /etc/samba/
 4. nano smb.conf
 5. save CTRL + O 
 7. exit wthout saving CTRL + X
