Why you need Mysql use Mariadb works exactly the same

If this file exists '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' ?

Check your selinux. Could be a root cause.

Is it mandatory that you have to install /usr/bin/mysql_secure_installation? Was the installation process of mysqlmysql-server successful? Did you create the database users while installation?
