I believe both Ubuntu and Fedora share an upstream problem. I documented it https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi/+question/174296">here. I use a live USB Image on a Dell Latitude 620 with the default options (Gnome Desktop). If I leave the laptop plugged in, but unattended for some time:

  • F15: The screen blanks, and a swipe across the trackpad restores it to full brightness.
  • F16: The screen blanks, but a swipe only restores to a dim state. I need to use the blue <fn> <arrow> key chords to make my screen bright again, and it seems to alternate between brighter and dimmer until it reaches peak brightness.

When plugged in, I expect an active laptop screen to be fully bright.

I am experiencing the same issue with Dell laptop - I think it is a bug since this has been working fine since Fedora 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15.

Thanks to kiilerix. I now know the increase and decrease of the actual brightness as I adjust the setting is is a known bug. But do you think it is the same root cause as the way the brightness does not return when I swipe across the trackpad?

I am experiencing the same issue with Dell laptop - I believe this issue is a defect that needs to be fixed. It was working fine with Fedora 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15.

Grrr. I can't comment on a comment. http://ask.fedoraproject.org/question/10/ .

The backlight behaviour was very strange, so I might have seen the same. Fixing the first issue will either fix the other or make it easier to diagnose it. But please add a comment in the bug report if you think they are related or can add more information.

IIRC I also got reports that the trackpad didn't work correctly on that machine, but I couldn't reproduce that.
