Can Nautilus search follow symlinks?

Hi,

if I use the search function of Nautilus, then I won't get any results of files/folders, they would be accessible by symbolic links.

An example:

  • /mnt/documents/hello.txt
  • /home/user/Document is a link to /mnt/documents

If I open /home/user in Nautilus and start a search with hello.txt, then I won't get any result. If I do the same from /mnt, then the result is hello.txt

It seems, that Nautilus doesn't consider symbolic links during the search. Is there a way to configure this behaviour?

The search option in Nautilus is just a quick and simple search. Following links would make it much more complicated. If you know the directory you want to search in is somewhere else, then just go there first. You can even make a bookmark for it to make it even easier.

Before Fedora 24, I never noticed this behavior, because I started my file search from the activities overview. But a Gnome Bug 766174- Recursive search not working in gnome 3.20.1 forced me to adapt my work-flow and I started to use Nautilus search more often. But then, I encountered, that Nautilus search doesn’t follow links. Because I know, where the files are, I will use a combination of Activities Search and Nautilus Search. th

There is a tool called gnome-search-tool.

sudo dnf install gnome-search-tool

It can perform:

File content
Modification date
Size
File emptiness
Owner/Group
Name pattern exclusion
Name regular expression match
Hidden and backup files

an also:

Follow symbolic links
Exclude other filesystems

Thanks for this advice. First, it works. But in my eyes, it is not a suitable replacement for the search as you type feature of nautilus.
