That's a good question. Originally, all external devices, such as floppies, CD or DVD discs needed to be manually mounted and were mounted in /mnt, but now, anything that's automounted goes into /run/media/user. For a time, when I was dual booting, I had my Windows partition mounted at boot to /C simply because that's what made sense to me. If they're being mounted when you plug them in, just let the system take care of it. If they're being mounted at boot through /etc/fstab you can put them anyplace you feel appropriate, as long as you make sure that the mount point exists.

Is there a best practice? how do i edit fstab ? is it $ sudo vi /etc/fstab ? what should I add. I am mounting this drive on a vm so the fstab file has a lot of weird names. They are not getting auto mounted cus its a fedora-server but I would like it to get mounted when I start the vm server.

Yes, that will work, if you insist on using an obsolete line editor like vi, but I prefer nano as it's a screen editor and has a list of the most common commands at the bottom of the screen. Much less user-hostile. I can't advise you about the VM, as I don't need or use them but I'm sure somebody else here can.
