Fedora 24 Scientific on VirtualBox problem guest additions

asked 2016-08-30 08:04:33 -0500

Hi, I just installed Fedora 24 Scientific on a VM in VirtualBox, seems to work fine. But when I try to install guest additions from Virtual Box I get error message and the additions do not get installed. The error message is related to missing "kernel headers" and "kernel devel". How should I install them? And why are they missing?

Kernel-headers and Kernel-devel are packages needed to help compile kernel modules, they are needed because VirtualBox is not included on Fedora as it is not a Free Software as freedom. So the installation process basic compile the module. Be aware that in the next kernel update you may need to recompile that module again.

So how do I install kernel-header and kernel-devel then? I am stuck at the moment as you may understand. And how do I continue the installation process?

Hi

Actually it helped to first do yum install kernel-devel-4.5.5-300.fc24.x86_64

then sudo dnf install kernel-revel kernel-headers

The first command was actually found in the error message after more careful reading.

:)
