Ask Fedora: What features / changes do we need in Askbot to make this site *really* work?

This is a followup of sorts to Ask Fedora: Is it working, and what's the future?, where as of this writing the top-voted answer comes from the upstream author of Askbot, asking us to keep up with Askbot and to wait for improvements (with which he is willing to help).

I have a list of things I think are important, and I'm going to add those as answers. Please vote up the ones you like, and add suggestions of your own. And, of course, feel free to answer as well.

To be clear, this isn't meant as a list of demands — it should be a useful, prioritized list of things we need which we will try to get help with — from upstream, from the infrastructure team, from the community of people who have worked on Ask Fedora, and from the open source world at large.

@mattdm: May I ask you what the status with this question and all 33 answers submitted by the user community is? Is there any active development on the Askbot software?

@florian the askbot application has been slowly developed since they only have around 1-2 devs fully submitting code. It has been harder to work with and keep things updated. Specially with everything being changed to python3 and askbot only supports python2. I recommend we continue looking into using discourse since its a fully developed forum application that its maintained by tons of devs.

Whatever you come up with, it need to be intuitive to those logging into the site, not scurried away in some obscure location

"Wiki answers" are meant to be that. An example is here. Though I like your idea since there is many more of those questions that get asked and answered over and over again.

Sometimes we can find in english default general chanel, O.P question in another language than English, maybe an mistake from some user that have to select their original language before ask the question :

What I do ?

Is to reject the question as non-english to offer the posibility the O.P to ask again in their own language chanel...

What we can improve in the way of admin/moderator ?

We can have and option to redirect the question to their original language to admin/moderator manage the question over there...

regards.,

Yes, the language change is missing in the question edit UI.

After upgrade from askbot 0.7.x to 0.10.x, is it not possible to convert a comment into an answer anymore? Under what conditions?

I tested this with my own question, and I can see the field/link Convert to answer for a few millisecs and it disappears.

Get rid of asymmetric karma allocation Completed via adjustment of current configuration

  • When one marks an answer as correct, user giving that answer receives +15 karma
  • when one unmarks it, -5 karma is applied.

Result: One can add indefinite karma to a user answering a questions by marking and unmarking an answer as correct.

-> Removing the correct flag should substract the same amount of karma that was added when answer was marked as correct.

This is something that can be fixed in the current settings. I've done so. There was a similar thing (-2, +1) for canceling downvotes. But let's make sure we retain the adjustments for future configuration!

If you scroll down the list of questions and click a question then go back in the browser the site loads again from the top.

It would be more usable, if it remembered the original scroll position.

Getting our own community on Stack Exchange

If we move to StackExchange (Instead of using AskBot and the Linux and Unix community for StackExchange) more people can easily ask for help and we would have our own meta community. The interface is also better because it is cleaner and has a better flow.

Proper input handling.

Entering "/opt/" or anything that starts with a "/" results in a 404, as the / is interpreted as part of the URL. So i believe it's not a security bug it should deliver a proper search result for posts containing that file or directory path or at least a error message, which chars are not allowed to search.

Search answers or show them all on the same page

This thread is getting long and clicking through 5 pages and searching in each one for duplicates is bothersome, so I just leave it here.

Paste images from clipboard

Because browsers allow this, and it is much easier to press Ctrl+Shift+PrtSc and Ctrl+V than to open Gimp, paste, save, then switch back, click image, Browse, select, okay.

Sorting answers by date (oldest/newest) does not work as expected. It keeps the "correct" answer as the top answer - that's confusing. See example here: https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/ques...
