Hello!

I've recently installed Fedora 16 on my netbook. I installed the KDE version but I would like Gnome 3 too, to switch between them. How can I install a whole desktop? Not only libraries or applications. I have no fear to command line.

Thanks in advance!

as simple as :

GNOME

sudo yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment"

KDE

sudo yum groupinstall "KDE Software Compilation"

XFCE

sudo yum groupinstall "Xfce"

LXDE

sudo yum groupinstall "LXDE"

Seeing all group availables :

sudo yum group list

if you are not willing to use the old desktop use:

yum groupremove [group]

NEW in Fedora 18

Cinnamon

Fedora users now have the option of using Cinnamon, an advanced desktop environment based on GNOME3. Cinnamon takes advantage of advanced features provided by the GNOME backend while providing users with a more traditional, accessible desktop experience. Install Cinnamon with the command:

sudo yum groupinstall "Cinnamon Desktop"

MATE

This is the initial release of MATE Desktop for Fedora 18. It brings back a classic, intuitive, and easy to use desktop that users have been long requesting. Install MATE by issuing the command:

sudo yum groupinstall "MATE Desktop"

if the user is the administrator yes, if you create a new account using "adduser" or GUI interface you do not get the sudoers group by default so you have to add in /etc/sudoers -> user ALL = (ALL) ALL

yep that is partially true, because when you execute visudo command this open the default command line editor for example vim or nano....

You can also use @ - yum install @xfce . The main advantage of visudo is that it checks for syntax errors and is thus helpful if the root account is locked. You can set an alternate editro (gedit) if you wish.

Great! It took some time to find that "X Window System" and "GNOME Desktop Enviroment" don't work for Fedora >= 18.

In Fedora 21, to install Gnome 3 desktop environment, I found this answer worked, unlike many of these older answers:

$ sudo yum groupinstall gnome

Just remember, before groupinstall you may need: sudo yum groups mark install 'graphical_environment'

Above answer is a bit outdated (usage of yum instead of dnf).

Please refer to Fedora's wiki for instructions.
