Hi guys and gals,

I need an easy FTP server for backing up files.

I am using Fedora 17.

Please tell me how to set up an easy server, with user and anonymous login.

Firewall ports are already configured for this.

2015-03-27 11:49:15 -0500 marked best answer grub2 - a question

I am using Fedora 17 since a few months, already have some experience with linux OS for several years.

In Grub2 I have seen there are only two entries in the main menu by default.

Someone gave me the hint to remove the submenu entry in /boot/grub2/grub.cfg

But: If I e.g. want to update the configuration with this command:

grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg

the submenu appears again.

How can I edit the config files - and which config file is it - to have all menu entries on one level for selection - that it is correctly recognized by the grub config functionality?

Before upgrading, be sure what you do and backup your data!

  1. You can use fedup: man fedup

  2. You also can make an upgrade with yum:

Upgrading Fedora using yum

  1. Download the DVD iso file and create a bootable media like usb stick or DVD and boot from that and choose upgrade option.
2013-09-28 03:02:59 -0500 answered a question how to create my custom spin of Fedora 19? - Como crear mi spin de Fedora 19?

I don't know how to make an own spin.

a) A solution might be to choose one of the standard spins and add your additional stuff once e.g. from an own USB stick with this command:

cd /path/to/rpm-files yum localinstall [rpm-files or just *]

b) If all the servers are connected in a network, you also could think about an own yum repo with your own files and activate this repo on the servers.

2013-09-24 04:03:08 -0500 answered a question How do I prevent users to shutdown the pc

At first, this is not a Fedora-related, rather a general Linux-related question.

Maybe you should think about seperating this machine from your users and giving them a machine for working with - even without hard disk if you consider using PXE Environment.

Fedora Linux does not use apt for managing packages, you should get yourself familiar with

I am not sure about what you want to do here, but for installation of grub2 simply use this command as user root:

yum install grub2

For more information, visit the manual pages for yum

man yum

An easy way is to search through /var/log/messages (or any other most appropriate file) with ont of the below compiled commands in a seperate terminal (accessible with [CTRL]+[ALT]+[1..6]:

cat /path/to/logfile |grep <searchterm>

Or for live logging

tail -f /path/to/logfile | grep <searchterm>

Worked for F16

So maybe you should search for a driver or a skype workaround.

sorry it is called yum-plugin-fastestmirror

2013-09-22 02:09:52 -0500 answered a question Taking too much time for System Update

You could try as root this command:

yum clean all

What is also very helpful, is to install the yum plugin for finding the fastest fedora-mirror:

yum install yum-plugin-fastest-mirror

If both does not help, you really need to wait.

The manual is legacy, because of systemd.

2013-09-17 06:02:43 -0500 asked a question F20 Alpha RC3 - german language support

I am severly using and intensively testing the newest Fedora 20 Alpha RC2 (and 3 today).

Already during installation of the Desktop x86_64 release candidate I am asked about what language and keyboard layout I want to use.

There is a warning message showing up if I want to change the language setting with 'system-config-language'

No Group named german-support exists. Do you still want to install language without proper support?

Within Gnome 3 everything is running fine, but not within a tty (I change to that with e. g. 'Alt-2')

What do I need to do for changing the keyboard layout for a tty with bash?

2013-09-17 05:49:56 -0500 commented answer How can i transform older distribution commands to fedora 19 command?

as mrunge already posted you are trying to mix up here your distribution with ubuntu. That's not a good deal - and you should learn very much more about yum package management systems Fedora uses. Use manpages or search the internet about that. Topic closed in my minds..

2013-09-17 05:47:45 -0500 answered a question Fedora 19 Dracut "swap does not exist" boot error

Try to run as root in a terminal:

dracut --regenerate-all --force

after a reboot it should be fixed again.

2013-09-17 01:40:15 -0500 answered a question How can i transform older distribution commands to fedora 19 command?

This is done by yum, the Yellow Dog updater Modified. (as root)

yum install foo
yum remove foo
yum update
yum clean all

The repos are configured in files you normally do not need to change. (only add maybe for adobe flash, google earth or so)

Here is a comparison

For more information see the manual via man yum

2013-09-16 03:17:09 -0500 answered a question how to view files which i copied in fedora 17 in windows 7

xconspirisist already mentioned the options if you have only one computer running at a time - with both operating systems on it.

If you have both running at the same time, I consider using samba or FTP. For this, there are some free ftp-servers for win available on the net.

By the way, Linux supports NTFS since a long time already.. maybe usable for large USB sticks with 128 GB or more..

Directly after start press Del or F2 for entering the BIOS. There you can change the setting from which media the booting process shall be started.

Ensure that you have created the pendrive correctly for booting.

2013-09-05 05:55:24 -0500 commented question Remove grub2 boot menu?

It just changed the grub.cfg and removed submenu and the bracket. After a kernel update, grub-mkconfig is not automatically started, only dracut. And e.g. if I add another kernel (compiled by my own) it is automatically added by "make install".

2013-09-05 01:57:08 -0500 answered a question Can't install x2go on F19

First, you should try the following command:

(as root)

yum install x2goagent x2goserver

(for searching) yum search x2go

x86 or x86_64 is automatically detected.

Maybe you find the files, download them manually, change into the folder and try: yum localinstall {exact filename}

If you do not succeed, I would go over to another tool

I got it running on F18, F19...

2013-09-05 01:44:55 -0500 asked a question Remove grub2 boot menu?

I'd like to remove the menu in grub2 that I can directly see all entries.

I already have done this but if I make

the old menu strucuture:

  1. Fedora
  2. Advanced Options

appears again.

What do I have to configure, that grub-mkconfig does not change the menu any more?
