2014-02-26 09:41:56 -0500 asked a question What sehll scripting language to learn for system admin in CentOS

I am a programmer, I want to install packages, setup system using a scripting language, rather than performing it manually.

Some of the tasks I want to perform are, install Apache Web server, Java, database server, update Linux, create file required for package installation.

What is the most common shell scripting language in modern server administration that I should learn?

Thanks in advance.

2014-02-26 09:12:32 -0500 asked a question Verify installation and install update after initial installation of CentOS

I have installed CentOS 6.5. I have questions regarding how to verify the installation is completely successful and install update.

1) How to install update after initial installation (what commands to input, or GUI). I tried 'yum update'. What else do I need to perform.

2) How to verify that the installation is completely successful, any errors in the installation process, where to check the process log.

Thank you in advance.

I have problem setup Apache web server. Below is the commands I input and the result. Webrower reports error on localhost

[root@localhost ~]# yum install httpd -y

Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, refresh-packagekit, security

Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile

 * base: mirror.sov.uk.goscomb.net

 * extras: mirror.sov.uk.goscomb.net

 * updates: centos.serverspace.co.uk

Setting up Install Process

Package httpd-2.2.15-29.el6.centos.x86_64 already installed and latest version

Nothing to do

[root@localhost ~]# chkconfig httpd on

**error reading information on service httpd: Invalid argument**

[root@localhost ~]# service httpd start

[root@localhost ~]#

No reposne to the last command.

Web browser report error on http://localhost

Any idea would be appreciated.

UPDATE

The CentOS is running on VirtualBox on Windows 7.

I tried to uninstall httpd, but failed using

yum remove httpd

httpd-2.2.15-29.el6.centos.x86_64 was supposed to be removed but is not!

  Verifying  : httpd-2.2.15-29.el6.centos.x86_64                                                                                   1/1

The first time I try to install httpd (yum install httpd), the OS frozen. I restarted it, which might corupt the kernel.

Good learning resource for setting up web server, and basic server administration for web developers, for beginner level and advanced level.

I am a web developer, want to learn setup of Linux server, and administration, e.g. knowledge of Linux system, setup web server, email, and more.

Thanks in advance!

2014-02-21 18:46:19 -0500 asked a question Can I use Fedora as a Linux-learning platform, and use CentOS as server?

I want to know the differences between all three distributions for a developer perspective, e.g. command, programming, setup server .

I want to learn Linux for programming purpose and server administration purpose. I don't need the latest Linux features. My PC has hardware issue with CentOS, but is working with Fedora 17.

My question is that, can I use Fedora as a Linux-learning platform, use Red Hat-based learning resource (not use new features in fedora), and switch to use CentOS for server using the same commands and kernel?

My understanding is that Fedora is founded to experiment new features for Red Hat. Red Hat might use the features from Fedora. CentOS has the same features as Red Hat with days of delay.

Please help. Thanks in advance.
