2015-11-30 14:55:56 -0500 answered a question How to improve fonts and font rendering in Fedora 20?

I installed freetype-freeworld package from RPMfusion, and I created a file ~/.fonts.conf like below, and that's it. Since then I never thought about Linux font rendering for a long time :-) It looks almost as good as Windows or Mac.

<fontconfig> <match target="font"> <edit mode="assign" name="rgba"> <const>rgb</const> </edit> <edit mode="assign" name="antialias"> <bool>true</bool> </edit> <edit mode="assign" name="autohint"> <bool>true</bool> </edit> <edit mode="assign" name="hinting"> <bool>true</bool> </edit> <edit mode="assign" name="hintstyle"> <const>hintslight</const> </edit> <edit mode="assign" name="lcdfilter"> <const>lcddefault</const> </edit> </match> </fontconfig>

2015-11-23 13:13:30 -0500 commented question [Fedora 23] Installing KDE Plasma as a second Desktop Environment! [bug]

your problem sounds like the Fedora 23 gdm bug. gdm does not work for some Graphics card. In my case, I've ditched gdm and I use kdm instead. Install kdm. Disable gdm and enable kdm with systemctl command and reboot. I guarantee that kdm will work. Otherwise, you wait 1 ~ 2 weeks till the gdm bug fixed.

2015-11-17 12:58:13 -0500 answered a question Nouveau with gdm loggin screen

I've changed my display manager to kdm. gdm is simply broken for recent Nvidia graphics cards. Don't use it.

You can report the bug but don't expect it fixed soon because I suspect it's related to Nvidia Wayland support thus more upstream and Fedora's premature adoption of unfinished product.

I'm still quite amazed how someone actually makes Fedora 23 unusable from the very beginning login screen.

2015-11-10 08:26:01 -0500 answered a question fedora 23 nvidia driver

I now use BETA Nvidia driver from http://negativo17.org/nvidia-driver/

You have to change SELinux to permissive to use the driver, and it's not 100% stable yet.

2015-11-10 08:25:54 -0500 commented question Fedora 23 + nvidia = gnome-shell mouse not working

I have no idea why Fedora 23 has been officially released even before Xorg 1.18 was released and related Nvidia drivers ready.

I now use Nvidia beta driver and it's not 100% stable. If I had known all these issues, I would have waited for 3~4 weeks to try Fedora 23.

If you can, stick to Fedora 22 until all the issues ironed out for Nvidia video cards.

2015-11-07 03:06:38 -0500 answered a question fedora 23 gnome login issues

Fedora 23's gdm is simply broken. I suspect that it does not support some recent Nvidia video cards. In my case I have a PC with GTX 960.

I just test-installed kdm and switched the display manager to kdm, and it works. Yes, I can login with kdm but no way with gdm.

What's the difference between gdm and kdm in Fedora 23 ?

As I said in my previous posting, I was happy running Fedora 22 on the same PC. After clean installing Fedora 23, I can't even login anymore with the default gdm.

The answer is that the gdm of Fedora 23 is simply broken for some recent Nvidia video cards, period.

I have not tried CUDA yet.

2015-11-05 08:16:56 -0500 answered a question fedora 23 gnome login issues

I have a PC with Nvidia GTX 960 graphics card and the same issue. I suspect it has to do with the default gdm support for GTX 960 ? After clean installing Fedora 23 with the default Gnome Live DVD, I can't login. gdm is simply broken.

Fedora 22 was not this bad, I suspect they changed something related to video card support in Fedora 23. My big mistake was to install Fedora 23 - I was running Fedora 22 happy on the same PC.

2013-02-07 06:13:07 -0500 asked a question Fedora 18 last shows a wrong minus duration

The last command (/usr/bin/last) in Fedora 18 has a bug. It sometimes shows a wrong duration like:

reboot system boot 3.7.5-201.fc18.x Fri Feb 8 05:56 - 20:57 (-8:-58)

Somehow it has a bug in calculating the uptime duration. Anyone knows a fix?

Thanks.

2013-01-24 15:40:43 -0500 answered a question iBUS doesn't work in fedora 18

Are you using Gnome desktop? ibus has been integrated into Gnome, and you can't run external ibus anymore. The Fedora 18 Release Notes has some explanation on how to setup input sources for different languages.

Warning: the integrated ibus is not good yet. The switching speed is slow.

If you use Goole Chrome, you might have 2 flash plungins. Enable the Chrome native flash plugin and turn off (disable) external one. The Chrome native one has the higher version number.

2013-01-20 07:57:53 -0500 commented question ibus switch glitch

I have the same problem. The switching takes at least a half second. I have to wait a second literally after I hit the switch shortcut not to make a typo.

I believe this is the most serious issue in Gnome's integrated ibus.

2013-01-20 07:48:06 -0500 answered a question Fedora 18 ibus broken

Well, I've learned that Gnome 3.6 does not support external ibus. It has integrated ibus.

In the Region & Language setting I've added Korean(Hangul) input source, and assigned Ctrl+Space to the next input source switching shortcut, I can now switch between Korean and English.

By the way, the switching response is very slow; it takes at least a half second.

2013-01-17 15:17:38 -0500 asked a question Fedora 18 ibus broken

After installing Fedora 18 Gnome Desktop, I tried to use ibus and ibus-hangul for Korean.

I ran im-chooser and select ibus, but I got a following error pop-up :

"Failed to switch input Method"

"GDBus.Error:org.gtk.GDBus.UnmappedGError.Quark._imsettings_2derror_2dquark.Code5:
Current desktop isn't targeted by Input Method."

I clicked "Log Out" and logged in again, but ibus didn't work at all. I could not toggle between English and Korean.

By the way, Fodora 17 had no problem with ibus and ibus-hangul. Something quite broke in ibus in Fedora 18.
