Hi to all. I have a general quiestion about security. I'm trying to reach these tow goal:

  1. Keep my personal data secure (encrypted)
  2. and backed up.

I can't find a user friendly and secure solution. I'd like to use just software in fedora repository. Here what i did.

  • solution 1 I use GoogleDrive (it could be another online storage provider). I created an encrypted folder (just for personal document, receipt, very important data... ) with encfs and synced to Drive. Then once a month i did a full /home backup with "backintime". I was happy with this because i did all in user space and was as simple as I wanted.

But I read about lack of security with encfs and read tihs on encfs site:

Over the last 10 years, a number of good alternatives have grown up. Computing power has increased to the point where it is reasonable to encrypt the entire filesystem of personal computers (and even mobile phones!). On Linux, ecryptfs provides a nice dynamically mountable encrypted home directory, and is well integrated in distributions I use, such as Ubuntu.

It seems to me that ecnfs is no longer mantained.

  • solution 2 trying to do de same replacing encfs with ecryptfs. I didn't find simple way to do this. i found ecryptfs-simple but read on xine's site:

This occurred in 2012. I have not checked ecryptfs since. The code may have improved since then. I have lost data with eCryptFS and can no longer recommend it. As far as I can tell, this is not due to ecryptfs-simple. All of the encryption and decryption is handled by eCryptFS, and data loss due to resulting input/output errors eith eCryptFS alone abound online. This may be due to some common user error1, but it is nevertheless too great a risk for important data. I have switched back to using EncFS for my data.

So I'm not able to find a solution. I'd prefer not to encrypt whole disk with LUKS, but I can change my mind. How do you keep your data secure and backed up?

Sorry for my english...
