Hi, I am trying to create a launcher for Matlab. I did some research and found these topics:

https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/ques...

https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/ques...

I have created a file called matlab.desktop in /home/rsatchel/.local/share/applications The contents of that file is:

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=MATLAB 2017a
Comment=Matlab 2017a
Exec=/home/rsatchel/MATLAB/bin/matlab
Icon=/home/rsatchel/MATLAB/matlabicon_128.png
Terminal=false
Categories=GNOME;GTK;Core;

I have triple checked the Exec location and am able to launch matlab from the command line using the Exec (/home/rsatchel/MATLAB/bin/matlab) A launcher item has appeared (although the icon doesn't show) and when I click the launcher the matlab splash screen appears, but matlab fails to launch.

I have tried changing to: Terminal=true as advised in one of the above links with no difference.

Can anyone advise on how to make the launcher work and how to make the icon appear? Is the icon too big/small?

Could you try the following? Exec=/bin/sh "/home/rsatchel/MATLAB/bin/matlab"

and give execution permissions to the desktop entry file?

Hi snatverk, Changing the permissions did the trick. Now it launches. However I still can't get the icon to appear on the launcher.
