Problem with POP3 in fedora 17. I have error if I will configure my outlook to connect to my POP3 Server. The error is as follows:

Sep 24 15:55:10 domainname dovecot: pop3-login: Disconnected (tried to use disallowed plaintext auth): user=<>, rip=xx.xx.xx.xx, lip=10.0.0.xx, session=<mhmt6G3KIgA6ucXC>
Sep 24 15:55:16 domainname sendmail[1327]: q8O7tGlh001327: [ip address] did not issue MAIL/EXPN/VRFY/ETRN during connection to MTA
Sep 24 15:55:47 domainname dovecot: pop3-login: Disconnected (tried to use disallowed plaintext auth): user=<>, rip=xx.xx.xx.xx, lip=10.0.0.0.xx, session=<EQTZ6m3KIwA6ucXC>
Sep 24 15:55:49 domainname dovecot: pop3-login: Disconnected (tried to use disallowed plaintext auth): user=<>, rip=xx.xx.xx.xx, lip=10.0.0.xx, session=<JPT66m3KJAA6ucXC>
Sep 24 15:56:00 domainname sendmail[1333]: q8O7u0a4001333: [xx.xx.xx.xx] did not issue MAIL/EXPN/VRFY/ETRN during connection to MTA

The complete set up are following:

  1. DNS Server is using DOMAIN Registrar Name Server.
  2. Actual Linux (Fedora 17) mail server is inside lan with IP Address 10.0.0.xx , cisco router config ip nat inside to 10.0.0.xx

Thanks very much.

You are using plaintext authentication and it's not allowed for your IP (the machine that run outlook).

Possible solutions:

  1. At the outlook change the authentication in your account settings from "Clear Text Authentication" to other option. Test for the supported option.

  2. If you are the admin of the dovecot server: in /etc/dovecot/conf.d/10-auth.log add your IP to the list of allowed IPs for plaintext auth.

    vi /etc/dovecot/conf.d/10-auth.conf

    # allow plain text auth
    disable_plaintext_auth = no

    # allowed authentication mechanism, at least these 2 options
    auth_mechanisms = plain login

Without more information is pretty hard to give a answer.

But I would think that it's a permission related problem. Check that the user that run dovecot has permission to access all the configuration files.

Check your log, you can set it more verbose as show here:

Dovecot 2 - Logging
