Setting up ramdrive in Fedora 20 and 24

asked 2017-05-25 08:21:57 +0000

I am running Fedora 20 from an USB drive. I have tried changing the swapiness to 1 and 0 but there are some freeze ups still. The live cd version uses ramdisk and is much faster. How can I implement ramdisk in Fedora 20, and are there any problems anyone has encountered in doing this?

I'm not sure what version of Fedora this was written for, but judging by the posting date, probably F 24, but I doubt that anything has changed. Take a look at this HOWTO and see if it does what you need. Please let us know if it works, and feel free to ask any time you need help, because that's what the site's for.

Thanks. Will try it, the instructions I read suggested cron job backup every 15 minutes, not sure if what will happen in between backups, also, what if I am installing software when the power goes off? Well nothing but to try and see. Or I will have to switch to another flavor.

If you've got stuff on your ramdisk that needs backing up that often, it doesn't belong there. A ramdisk should only be used for stuff that doesn't need to survive past a reboot. If you're installing software and the power dies, the same thing happens whether you use a ramdisk or not: you have to repeat the install.

Tried the instructions here : https://www.jamescoyle.net/how-to/943... . noticeably faster fewer freeze ups but freeze ups take place. I should have used ramfs and adjusted swappiness, that way only stuff that would go into the temp file will go to the ram disk.
