I'm a newbie and I think I've gotten myself into a mess. In September, I transferred files from my old laptop to my new one. I then installed Fedora 25 on my old laptop. It previously had Windows 7. I haven't used Fedora since then, but I still have files on the old laptop that I want to recover, but Fedora is not recognizing my local login. I know how to reset the password, and I've tried using it in Rescue mode, but I can't access the desktop mode.

You can use a live Fedora media and mount you disk to copy the files to another drive or usb drive. You could also changes root password on the machine following this instructions How to reset a root password then login as root and get you files or change your user password.
