The Anaconda "MANUAL PARTITIONING" page contains two headings:

  • New Fedora 26 installation
  • Unknown Linux

What does "Unknown Linux" mean?

More details

I am attempting a clean install of Fedora Workstation from Fedora 25 to Fedora 26. I want to install Fedora 26 on smaller root and home partitions so that I can add more Linux installs later (as described in https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/ques... ).

I try Destructive Repartitioning as described in https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/...

From "MANUAL PARTITIONING" page, I delete all the partitions and replace them with partitions of the same name. Deleting root and home partitions and replacing them with smaller 20 GiB partitions of the same name. The New Fedora 26 installation partitions look like this:

fedora-home 20 GiB

fedora-root 20 GiB

sda2 977 MiB

sda1 200 MiB

fedora-swap 7.82 GiB

Then click "Done", select some software, and click "Install". After 5 hours of down loading (Netinstall), there is an error. I restart Anaconda, and the partitions are as before, but listed under "Unknown Linux", and "New Fedora 26 installation" is empty.

What does "Unknown Linux" mean? And is the next step in the install process?

Unknown Linux means that anaconda can't identify what Linux is using that partition. I don't know if it will actually detect anything other than Fedora, but in this case the Fedora install didn't get far enough to be identifiable.

Just do the install again. You should be able to just reuse the existing partitions that you created, although you should mark the / to be reformatted. Btw, you don't need to create a /boot partition, it will just be put in the / partition.

What was the error?
