After upgrading to Fedora 26 from Fedora 25, File returns "Folder Empty" when accessing Windows Network

Fedora 26 SMBCLIENT displays password prompt and then accesses Windows XP server and its shares with no problem

This is confusing

8/15/17 Testing with Wireshark

1) I captured traffic between my fedora 26 system and my windows xp master browser 2) I used File to open the Windows Network, no password prompt, and get the "Folder Empty" displayed Note) With Fedora 25, I get the password prompt with File after opening Windows Network no problems

This is just my best educated guess, but the protocols that Windows XP support have been deprecated and Windows XP itself is unsupported and no longer receive any updates.

Which means it will not have been updated to newer versions of the SMB protocol. SMBv1 and SHA-1 have been deprecated by Microsoft and the industry and pulled from GNOME Files (Nautilus) and newer versions of Windows. However, samba-client in Fedora is a few months older (and I’m not sure if they’ve removed the legacy features just yet).

There could be something else wrong, but it sounds like the most likely cause as the old protocols have been deprecated and that your using an old and unsupported server. I hope this helps.

thanks! I will install an ftp server and do my file transfers in that manner.

Maybe consider installing Fedora Server edition on your Windows XP machine if it’s used as a server? That way, you’d get a still-supported operating system and regular security and feature updates.
