I want to run Dolphin as root, but I only get this error message.

$ sudo dolphin
Executing Dolphin as root is not possible.

I ran Dolphin as root on other distros. How can I defeat this annoyance so I can once again use Dolphin as root?

Had the same problem: had to fix it by myself https://github.com/aigars-github/Fedo...

No joy. I forced an install, but the main problem persists. Although your version can run as root, it can't compare files and editors don't work.

Go to /etc/services in one view, and /usr/local/BACKUPS/etc/services in the other view. Next select TOOLS, and in the drop down menu you'll see compare, but it's grayed out so I still can't use it as root!

I also cannot open root owned files with Kate or Kwrite. So this isn't working, even though it can run as root.

If you don't mind using a different file manager as root, you can install thunar, the Xfce file manager. I don't use sudo, as I prefer to use su. (It's my machine, and I know the root password, so there's no reason for me not to use it.) Checking, I see that running su -c thunar works just fine. I've also installed beesu, which allows you to launch a program as root in a GUI, and having a launcher on my panel that runs the command beesu - thunar on those rare occasion that I need to run a file manager that way. (If you're running KDE, as I presume because you're using Dolphin.) there may be a DE specific version of beesu that you can use.

Ok, I finally got around to installing thunar, and I was very disappointed. It lacks important features which Dolphin has:

Split windows so you can be in two different directories simultaneously, The ability to compare files, The ability to patch files section-by-section while comparing them, and so on. I'll have to find a way to fix Dolphin so I can use it again.

This is actually a new "feature" of Dolphin. The check his hard coded in Dolphin source -- https://cgit.kde.org/dolphin.git/comm... -- and it is not possible to change it (without recompiling Dolphin).

Martin Gräßlin's blog explaining this change -- https://blog.martin-graesslin.com/blo... (for Kate, but Dolphin change is result of this).

If you want to run file as root I suggest Midnight Commander.

For general use is easier to just install a light file manger e.g. PCManFM (unlike Thunar and PCManFM-Qt has split view with F3).

Then, add a custom menu action to Dolphin:

  • create the folder(s) ~/.local/share/kservices5/ServiceMenus

  • run in terminal kwrite ~/.local/share/kservices5/ServiceMenus/Open_folder_as_root.desktop

  • paste the following and save:

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Service
ServiceTypes=inode/directory
MimeType=inode/directory;
Actions=root
X-KDE-Priority=TopLevel
X-KDE-Topmenu=Open as root
X-KDE-Icon=dolphin
X-KDE-ServiceTypes=KonqPopupMenu/Plugin

[Desktop Action root]
Name=Open folder as root
Icon=dolphin
Exec=kdesu pcmanfm  %U

Actually it is possible to undo the damage without having to recompile dolphin. However there are certain requirements. To learn how to do it go to the following site and follow the directions listed in the blog. https://iwf1.com/linux-users-bypass-e...
