FC 25. I'm currently running KDE Plasma on Workstation, but I want to try the cinnamon-desktop-environment. I've tried various methods of starting a second terminal using startx but it always fails. I've tried following various suggestions in forums; startx -- :2 cinnamon-desktop-environment, failed. what do I have to do to do this please? To be clear: KDE Plasma is running in terminal 1 (F1) if you like; i want to try Cinnamon in terminal 2 (F2). How do I do that?

It fails because startx will try to run another instance of Xorg. You can install Xephyr and use startcinnamon (I guess there il such script, just like the startkde script that won't launch another Xorg) with it. You might have other issues though with a complex DE such as Cinnamon; I'm thinking of pulseaudio and dbus. I can run fluxbox and i3 through Xephyr and, with little more configuration, another monitor, mouse and keyboard you can achieve a multiseat setup.

Have not tried recently, but you should probably be able to use 'switch user' from the user menu of your current DE, login with your user again but selecting a different DE.

See this:

I recommend use only one DE at once (to avoid conflicts), specially when they have same base(e.g. gnome setting shares between gnome based DEs)

IMO, the best solution would be to make a VM, using the iso from a live DVD of fedora, and run the installer. Once your VM fedora is running, install cinnamon and play with it. since you are running as a VM you have no problems with Xorg complaining about multiple instances, and you can explore all the features you want, safely in the VM without risking data loss.

I think using VM not covers ternnor needs

since startx does not permit multiple instances, how do you propose to allow him access to all the available features of a second DE in the same boot instance? All the terminals share the same boot instance, unless r4unning inside a VM.

One can always switch DE from the display manager, one DE per session.

sudo dnf grouplist -v

And for the Cinnamon desctop, it will be displayed like: Cinnamon Desctop (cinnamin-desktop-environment) for KDE, for example: KDE Desktop (kde-desktop-enironment) you type:

sudo dnf install @kde-desktop-environment

and respectively for Cinnamon:

sudo dnf install @cinamon-desktop-environment

For every Group, including desktops, it's the same command with '@' before the code name of the group in '( )'.
