I am experiencing very slow user-interface response in Fedora 26 with Gnome 3 with certain applications; specifically pycharm and Spyder from the Anaconda Python distribution. These applications work fine with other Linux desktop environments, e.g. cinammon. [UPDATE: see below; the problem is not specific to these applications].

When selecting menus from application menu bar at the top of the window, the menus are very slow to appear, and when pressing the ESC key to dismiss them it takes around 2s for them to disappear. This makes the shell virtually unusable.

I had a similar issue with Thunderbird and Firefox, which I was able to resolve by disabling IPv6, but the problem persists with pycharm and Spyder.

This happens with both X and Wayland. I have disabled animations using gconf-editor. My hardware is a Dell XPS 13 notebook with Core i7 @ 2.7Ghz, Intel integrated graphics and 16Gb RAM.

Does anybody know what the issue is and whether there is a workaround for this?

Disabling animations via gnome-tweak (Appearance/Enable animations) solved the problem.

It seems that with animations enabled, menus were gradually slowing down, and this was affecting all applications, not just those mentioned those above. Restarting the shell (Alt-F2 'r') under X fixed the problem temporarily.

Does anybody else experience this problem with Intel Integrated graphics? I am using the i915 driver.

Below are the details of my video hardware.
