upgrade path

asked 2017-11-19 09:51:31 -0500

i've been a linux user off and on for 15 years. i've tried many many many distros and they all have their own strengths and weaknesses. one weakness i see in fedora is the upgrade path, inevitably i will break something in Linux and have to resort to a reinstall. this last time around i was able to login but was presented with a black screen and all i could do was pull down yakuake. i'm not advanced enough to fix everything thru the terminal, it's just easier for me to reinstall. thankfully fedora does create a separate /home partition so i was able to save that on reinstall but it sure would be awesome if fedora would implement and upgrade process. i was on 26 so i went to 27 since i had to reinstall but i feel an upgrade would have saved most of the programs i had added to the default install

What upgrade path are you referring, I have successful upgrade my notebook and 2 others since Fedora 21 every release up to 27 which updated last night, been the easiest to accomplish.

Welcome to ask.fedora. Please explain what you mean when you say that Fedora doesn't have an upgrade path, because there are several ways to upgrade. Just recently, I upgraded my laptop from Fedora 25 to 26, and expect to upgrade it to 27 as soon as I'm sure that the last few glitches are out of 27, and I'll also be doing the same with my desktop, possibly skipping right over 26.

in the setup there's no upgrade option if it detects a fedora install, other distros do this but not fedora. linux mint will give you an option in the package manager to upgrade the distro when a new version becomes available. how do you upgrade fedora?
