I was hitting a dbus error when trying to run the command mentioned in @samuel-sieb 's post

Error:

dconf-WARNING **: failed to commit changes to dconf: Error spawning command line “dbus-launch --autolaunch=5d826835018c4300b39dd8e84d1a30be --binary-syntax --close-stderr”: Child process exited with code 1

I did find the answer on the arch linux wiki. The trick is adding dbus-launch to the command.

sudo -u gdm dbus-launch gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.peripherals.touchpad tap-to-click true

Which will return No protocol defined. If you restart the machine, you should have tap to click working.

That is strange. Maybe your gdm is not starting a dbus session for some reason.

The instruction from that question to use sudo -u gdm gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.peripherals.touchpad tap-to-click true should work. I just tried it and it worked for me. You have to run that as root.

I can confirm that the above line throws the following error: dconf-WARNING **: failed to commit changes to dconf: Error spawning command line “dbus-launch --autolaunch=5d826835018c4300b39dd8e84d1a30be --binary-syntax --close-stderr”: Child process exited with code 1
