# Cannot get scanner to work in Fedora 27. HP Officejet 6600 all-in-one

I installed the HP Officejet 6600 All-In-One printer in the Settings menu, and the printer works. I installed XSane, and attempted to open the program, but it doesn't find the scanner, nor does Simple Scan. I tried installing the HPLIP graphic front end, but I have not been able to install from that. I'm at a loss.

You could try the command line hp setup program which is part of the hplip package that you should have already:

sudo hp-setup -i

Make sure your Officejet is connected and switched on before you run this. It will try to find the device and will ask various other questions. It doesn't actually ask about the scanner but with my different hp all-in-one devices, the scanner always worked afterwards.

(If this helps, you might end up with two printers but you can always delete one later.)

Sorry, it did not work, and I still have only one printer (not a bad thing). I'm currently pursuing the "Help" instructions provided when the scanner was not found by XSane. There are several possibilities listed. Among them, that the device permissions require me to run it as root, the backend is not loaded by Sane (man sane-dll), or the back end is not configured correctly (man sane-"backendname" . I'll let you know how I do. Oddly, when I first installed XSane, the device was FOUND, and only after a re-boot was it lost. It seems I may need to alter a config file for loading the back end.

So far, no luck. It did not help to run it as root. There is no entry on my system for man sane-"backendname", and I'm Alice in Wonderland with man sane-dll. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling XSane, with no luck. I'm giving it a break for now, but if you have any further suggestions, I'll be game a bit later. Thanks!

Sorry the answer didn't help. I can only think of two other things to try:

• Make sure that the package libsane-hpaio is installed
• Try running sudo hp-check and see whether the output shows any errors.

libsane-hpaio is installed. I also ran hp-check, there are a number of things wrong, but I don't know how to fix them. I could send you a copy of the hp-check log if there is some way to do it.

A copy of the hp-check log can be downloaded from here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/le560xy4hir...

It's a bit much to ask, but if you are so inclined to check this out and advise, I'd appreciate it. I really don't know how to correct this.

Thanks!

I am using a HP Officejet 8600 and I have the same error in the "simple scan" application on fedora 26. In the systems log - i found an entry with „io/hpmud/model.c 532: no icejetpro8600 attributes found in /usr/share/hplip/data/models/models.dat“.

My solution for the problem was the following. I make a backup of the file /usr/share/hplip/data/models/models.dat. Open the file models.dat for editing and search for '"officejetpro8600". I found the entry [officejetpro8600] and changed it to [icejetpro8600] like the entry in the error message. Save the file (must be root).

After this change my scanner worked as before.

Many thanks for the help. However, it turns out that Fedora 27 is not yet supported by HPLIP and some functionalities don't work. Fedora 27 support will be included in a future release of HPLIP. Please see https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+...
