False OS update notifications on F27

Since upgrading to F27, I have received a notification every day that "Important OS and application updates are ready to be installed." However, much of the time it isn't true. I run sudo dnf upgrade, and there is nothing to do. This didn't happen for me with F25 and F26.

I have the same question here https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/ques...

because I didn't find your question.

Like your case, dnf update and dnf check-update reported nothing to do.

dnf refresh followed by dnf update and dnf check-update showed no updates.

However dnf clean all followed by dnf check-update and it found all the updates listed in PackageKit.

I do not understand this at all or how disabling PackageKit will fix this.

I expect that Gnome Software isn't aware of you changing things behind it and only checks once in a while, but still notifies you every day.

These notifications appear due to the fact that dnf and PackageKit, on which gnome-software depends on, are (still) running side-by-side. You can get rid of those 'confusing notifications' by disabling the 'automatically download updates' feature of GNOME Software and by disabling the cache of PackageKit.

Execute gsettings set org.gnome.software download-updates false.

Additionally execute sudo nano /etc/PackageKit/PackageKit.conf.
Uncomment the line #KeepCache=false (remove the character #).

Now updates are managed by DNF exclusively without the notifications.

Just FYI: After updating with dnf, you can also let PackageKit now the new status by refreshing its (package) meta data: pkcon refresh force
